Scope and Content Note

Newhall's personal files are arranged chronologically. Series II contains correspondence, including letters between Beaumont and Nancy dating from World War II, interviews by and of Beaumont, and journals that give an almost daily account of Beaumont's professional activities. Five folders hold journals that belonged to Beaumont's parents and grandparents. Oversize scrapbook pages hold reviews and letters about several of Newhall's books and are filed in the Oversize series, box 265*.

Scope and Content Note

Newhall's writings, in published and manuscript form are arranged chronologically. The numerous articles, books and reviews span seven decades, and are in the form of clippings and typescripts. Most of the writings are about photography, but also included are other pieces such as early short stories, and essays on other topics, such as painting or ship model repair. Approximately two linear feet of this series is devoted to his last publication, Focus: Memoirs of a life in photography.

Scope and Content Note

This series includes lecture files, sound cassettes, and slides. Lecture files are arranged chronologically by date of presentation, and contain transcripts along with miscellaneous materials relating to the lectures, but in some instances only the announcements for lectures. The lectures cover subjects such as Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Photography as Art, Alfred Stieglitz, and Edward Weston. Audio recordings of the lectures are arranged by date of recording. Over 8,000 slides comprise the largest portion of this series. They are organized either by lecture number, or alphabetically by subject.
