Series I. Correspondence, 1951-2006, undated

Physical Description: 13.76 Linear Feet (30 boxes, 1 flatfile folder)

Scope and Content Note

The letters date from 1957 to 2006, with the bulk dating from the early 1960s to the mid 1980s. Most of the correspondence is with Alfred Schmela, but also interfiled is correspondence of his wife Monika, and daughter Ulrike.
Present is outgoing correspondence and letters received from artists, collectors, museum curators and directors, other art dealers, and organizers of art fairs and international shows, with drafts of artists statements and price lists occasionally included. Letters from the gallery are predominantly carbon copies of typescripts. While some items are of a perfunctory business nature, including utility bills, insurance and freight documents, the vast majority of the correspondence is rich in detail about individual artists and exhibitions, often including prices and detailed descriptions of specific artworks.

Arrangement

The correspondence series is divided into three subseries: artists, art galleries, and clients. Each subseries are arranged alphabetically.

Series I.C. Clients, 1951-1996, undated

Physical Description: 7.51 Linear Feet (18 boxes)

Scope and Content Note

This subseries is comprised of sales records and other business correspondence with private and corporate art collectors, including banks and industrial companies, museum curators, publishing houses, and various other cultural institutions in Europe and in United States. Nearly all major German art museums are represented, especially from the Rhine-Ruhr region. The letters provide insight into the collecting interests of many of the gallery's clients, and Alfred Schmela's professional activities as an art dealer, particularly his ways of attracting buyers, his opinion about the artists he represented, and current art market trends. The letters show Schmela advising curators about new art movements and thus influencing the shape of German art museums' collections and exhibiting programs. Frequently included are details regarding particular artworks, such as title, dimensions, technique, year of creation, and sales price. Occasionally present are shipping invoices, insurance documents, bank statements, and other financial records. Interfiled with this subseries are documents concerning maintenance, repair, utility expenses, and insurance records of the gallery spaces, and the Schmela family's various personal and business expenses.

Arrangement

The original arrangement maintained at Galerie Schmela is preserved. The files are divided chronologically into two groups: correspondence from the 1950s and 1960s and from the 1970s until the 1990s. Each group is arranged alphabetically. Unidentified clients are filed at the end of each letter sequence. Each group includes a few items from an earlier or later date, as originally filed at the gallery.

Series III. Photographs, circa 1923-1992, undated

Physical Description: 3.93 Linear Feet (5 boxes)

Scope and Content Note

This series documents events taking place at the gallery's various locations in Düsseldorf. It is comprised of several hundred vintage photographs taken at Galerie Schmela exhibition openings, and other events such as art fairs and museum exhibitions. Also present are installation shots and group photos of Alfred Schmela and his wife Monika Schmela with artists, clients, and other individuals. A few photographs allow a glimpse into the Schmela family's personal life, including a few of Alfred Schmela's childhood and youth. Several photographs are of various artworks by Joseph Beuys. The prints are predominantly black and white, although a few color photographs, color transparencies, negatives, and slides are also present. Photographers' stamps can be found on versos of most of the prints, frequently with notes explanatory of the event or identifying individuals seen in the photographs. Among the photographers credited are Walter Vogel, Charles Wilp, Ute Klophaus, Manfred Tischer, Reiner Ruthenbeck, Bernd Becher, Robert Häuser, Liselotte Strelow, and Bernd Jansen. Two uncredited photographs are by Jon Naar. The original numbers provided in the container list are numbers assigned to the photographs by the gallery. Filed with this series is an illustrated manuscript made on the occasion of an Hommage an Schmela event (box 34, folder 50).

Arrangement

Most files are arranged chronologically following the moves of the gallery to various locations in Düsseldorf, i.e. Hunsrückenstrasse, Luegplatz, Mutter-Ey-Strasse, and the sculpture park in Lohausen, and subsequently by date. Undated materials are found at the end of each file. The last three files are topical.
