Irene: a poem, in six cantos: miscellaneous poems

X.

"She whose dear will is law, whose angel breast
"Can know no change, your true and wedded wife,
"Hath issued to her servant such behest.
"Come, then!"—A stab from an assassin's knife
Would have been light to this: in stormy strife
Conflicting feelings such a whirlwind rais'd
In Florio's brain, that had not youth and life
Been strong within him, gasping and amaz'd
He would have dropp'd down dead, ev'n as he stood and gaz'd.
