The Green Alfalfa Is Caught In A Power Box Pulled By Same Diesel Tractor That Pulls The Forage Harvester undated

Scope and Contents

2-picture story: stretching pastures for dairy herd by green crop harvesting and feeding in dry lots. It increases carrying capacity of an acre of alfalfa at least 25%, says T.L. Shelton, Chula Vista, California, who owns this Allis-Chalmers WD-45 and forage harvester. The green alfalfa is caught in a power box pulled by same diesel tractor that pulls the forage harvester, then unhitched from harvester when box is full, and the load hauled to the manger running alongside the dry lot and unloaded by a mere touch of the finger to the control in front of tractor driver. Shelton sells his alfalfa crops to neighboring dairyman and also to his son-in-law for a satisfactory deal to all.

Here he is flanked on the left by California Manager Nelson and on the right by [Blockman?] Arnold of Los Angeles territory. Ellzey is the third Oklahoman to make that state famous outside its boundaries. Will Rogers and Wiley Post were the other two, of course. Mr. Brown is the man who first dressed tractors and road machinery in bright colors to cash in on color sales appeal. Then, he put air tires on them and sent Barney Oldfield racing farm tractors around state fair tracks at automobile speeds. Now he is adding stream lining to his stable of iron horses. His Allis-Chalmers tractor copy shows the way to the field in speed, power and draw-bar pull. Photo by Orville Logan Snider.

HD-11 A-C dozer clearing and levelling new land for irrigation 6 December 1955

Scope and Contents

Piling mesquite trees, filling a small wash. Mr. Vance appears to be quite an operator. Now farming 1400 acres cotton, barley, alfalfa, etc., a few miles north of here. Just starting to clear this new ranch, 15,000 acres fine desert loam soil, been at it 3 months and has 400 acres ready or in crop -- barley first year. Expects to be dix years getting the entire 15,000 under irrigation from deep wells. Each well and pump costs $15,000 to $20,000 and usually takes about two to three square miles. So this kind of farming requires somebody with plenty cash, plus plenty of willingness to gamble.

Electricity Produced by 1,008 Fuel Cells Powers This Experimental A-C Tractor circa 1960

Scope and Contents

Electricity produced by 1,008 fuel cells powers this experimental Allis-Chalmers tractor. T.G. Kirkland, a member of the research team that built the cells and installed them in the engineless tractor, points to a unit of nine fuel cells. Chemical reactions between a mixture of fuel gases and oxygen -- largely propane -- and an electrolyte within the cells produce 15 kilowatts of electricity. The direct current goes through bus bars (the bright, horizontal bars shown above) to a compact controller which regulates the speed and direction of the tractor by controlling the amount of current reaching the 20-horsepower motor.

New Bull Gear & Pinion buried in the ground under a wood pile to escape scrap drive in World War Two. I put them both on and they fitted perfect. Restored the wood part of wheel, made of white oak, at a cost of $800 not counting my labor. Engine last used around World War I on saw mill. Gave one just like it to Edison Museum at Dearborn, 1934. H.P. Mohr, "Millionaire Thresherman" circa 1890

Scope and Contents

H.P. Mohr, "millionaire thresherman," is the gent with his beaver pointing to the camera and his back to his Aultman-Taylor engine (B. B. Brown's judgment of make) threshing on his ranch near Pleasanton, Calif., 1890s. The old boy was a "character," say old timers who knew him. When it came lunch time, he would merely reach in his pocket and pull out a piece of cheese and bread and eat instead of going to a restaurant when he was in town or city on a business trip. He had about every kind of steam engine that appeared on the California front -- English Fowler cable pair, Payne, Best, etc. Henry Ford bought a wire binder fron him after he had first given it to the U. of California Agricultural College at Davis.

President Bartholomew Showing Entry at California Tractor Demonstration circa 1920

Scope and Contents

President Bartholomey of Avery's hand is apparent here in showing his entry at a California tractor demonstration would stand more side tipping than rivals. The first Fordson shown at the Los Angeles area demonstrations kept the factory crew up all night to cast enough concrete to keep it from flipping over backwards to catch the unwary farm hand in the seat. So recalls Ad. Mgr. Hyatt of California Cultivator who took this picture and saw all the tractors shown at these pioneer tractor shows in the Los Angeles area from 1916 to 1921.

Seeding Fall Wheat While Harvesting Crop Of Spring Wheat 1913

Scope and Contents

1913 Pine Bluff, Wyoming. Seeding fall wheat while harvesting crop of spring wheat. Big Four tractor pulling Baldwin "standing grain thresher," an idea Mr. Baldwin was about to bring back in a new combine when he died.
Verso: once over and all over. Seeding a crop of fall wheat while harvesting a crop of spring. All or complete job of producing the wheat accomplished in a single operation. A Baldwin standing grain thresher being pulled by a big 4 tractor near pine bluffs, Wyoming in the Fall of 1913. When using the method of threshing standing grain the straw is not cut. Note it is standing just where it grew. It is this method I plan to resurrect for my combine of tomorrow. It has the old method skinned in every way. Curt Baldwin riding on the S.G. Thresher. The two birds [cowboys] in the rear are not needed they are just going along for the ride.
