Letter book of private correspondence. 1903 December 1-1907 January 3

This letter book contains copies of correspondence between Updike and various individuals, presumably bound separately for confidentiality purposes. Much of the correspondence relates to Updike's involvement in various plans to develop a press for Harvard University, or sell or accept loans for the Merrymount Press and includes letters to James Loeb, C.E. Norton, and Eliot Norton, and others. There is also some miscellaneous correspondence related to the estate of Updike's grandmother and property in Worcester, Massachusetts, and additional letters to recipients including Madame Fauchery (of E. Fournier & Company), Edward P. "Ned" Warren (Lewes, Sussex, England), a few letters to Jane Addams (Hull House, Chicago).

Correspondence and documents arranged by group. 1906-1952

Physical Description: 311 boxes

Arrangement

Beginning in 1906, the Merrymount Press began organizing correspondence, bills, and estimates by customer according to the order in which the first communication with the customer was received. The first entity the Press corresponded with after beginning this system, Robert G. Osgood, was assigned the number, "1," the next customer, The Manhattan Photogravure Company, identified as group "2," and so on through to group 2313, the Roosevelt Memorial Association, in 1948. Consequently, the files cannot be browsed alphabetically or chronologically, but can only be accessed by knowing the group number of the correspondent (listed below in the box inventory). Additional communication with that customer received over subsequent years was added to the file, and based on the relationship between the customer and the Press, some groups have documents requiring multiple boxes, while others are only represented by one piece of correspondence.
