Additional information included inside the negative enclosure: "schooner VIGILANT, after the storm, 1931. Crew consisted of skipper, mate, 2nd mate (A. Grunlund), cook, and eight sailors. The VIGILANT arrived at Cape Flattery at the end of its voyage on January 5, 1932. 'We were drifting half way to China, a head wind all the time from Honolulu to Seattle, Washington. On Christmas Eve came a gale which ripped or lost two out of four sails and broke the spanker and mizzen gaffs. It was three days like this before we got the gaffs fixed. We were logging with bare poles at 15 knots. The turnbuckles were used up. We almost lost the rigging and had to put tricing lines across the ship, shroud to shroud, set up with handy billies.'" -Alfred Grunlund.

Aderman later went into the fishing business around this same time with a man named Tillman, likely the same. They bought a fishing boat, BALTIC. The relationship soon dissolved and Aderman went out as Chief Mate on Zane Grey's fishing schooner NAVIGATOR, with Captain Fred Klebingat.

Ten men in view. Ernest Aderman, second from right. See P80-091 for print. Information from master file includes the following note from Klebingat: "I do not recall the men's names #1-2-3 or 8, they were likely Norwegians. Number 4 in the middle of the yard was acting Second Mate. He was before the sail maker on the four masted bark OTTOWA (ex BERTHA, ex BUCKINGHAM), then at anchor in sausalita [sic], later on she was taken over by the U.S. Government and named FLYING CLOUD, and later MUSCOOTA. I do not recall his name, he settled in San Francisco and went into house painting. #5 was a German man by the name of Frank Dorr ... he was a very educated man and took a course with I.C.S. in Civil Engineering. This probably did not turn out as he hoped to be, so he took up house painting, and some time after World War I, he was killed in an accident at the Palace Market on Market Street in San Francisco. He was painting the ceiling and the staging gave away. #6 was a German we called 'Codfish Bill'. I do not know his name and how he came to the Pacific Coast, he had made a trip cod fishing in the schooner SEQUOIA therefore his nickname. #7 was a German who arrived at Sausolita [sic] in the German four masted bark OTTOWA. He was known as Mandus, he seemingly was in love with the daughter of Henry Siems, who owned the Valhalla Restaurant and Beer Garden at Sausolita [sic] - if he married the girl I do not know. He was a man who was not over anxious to work, and so I had to tell him 'If I was you, I would quit, before I get fired.' He took the hint and asked for his money. #9 was E. Ademan, the man who owned the camera. Still serving as A.B. I snapped the photo. He did his own developing and printing. #10 A German we knew as 'Caranza.' I do not know his real name, I heard that after the war he returned to Germany and passed for Mate and probably Captains papers. Note: 'Bunt gasket by me. company colors red, white and blue -- A -O-CO in black block letters. The company's house flag. These were made by me, at the Captain's request."

Note the weather cloth in the spanker rigging. This was fastened in the weather rigging so that the mate on watch could get some shelter from wind, rain, or snow while on watch. We had two, this saved shifting the weather cloth when going on the other tack. All you had to do was make the lee weather cloth fast or furl it, and stretch the one out which was on the weather side. Captain Asmussen of the schooner SAMAR did not believe in anything like that. His mates may feel too comfortable and go to sleep."

You float a hose ashore; every 20 feet or so you have a gasoline drum to keep the hose up. The fellows ashore heave until the hose appears on top of the bluff; then we went ashore and hooked the hose up ourselves... about a four inch hose; 54-gallon drums, otherwise the hose wouldn't float... probably 200 years..."

It is a quench-gap type, and the quench-gap can be seen as the long square object to the right in the picture. This device determined the operating frequency, and was adjusted by inserting or removing the square plate assemblies. The circular device is a matching network for the antenna, and is know as a helix. The object to the extreme left with the ball on top is the antenna send-receive switch. Below the bench is a power transformer. The ship had a stand-by transmitter in the form known as a "rotary spark gap." This was not liked by the operators because of its tendency to change speed and tone during operation. There was no provision for voice communication, all operation being confined to Morse Code. There was also a stand-by power system in the form of batteries."

Additional information inside the negative enclosure: "The radio equipment pictured herein had a transmitting power of five kilowatts. Wavelengths used were 600, 800, and 1500 meters. Call letters of the ship were KUKS, and radio communication was maintained with a station in San Francisco which my father designated the "San Francisco government station" with call letters NPL. Direct communication range was approximately 5,000 miles, and more distant communication was achieved by means of the relay system. Position of the ship, speed, and oil consumption were radioed to home port at 9:00 p.m. each night. But now, on to the pictures. They are numbered on the back. First, number one. This is a crystal receiver. To the left of the six knobs the cat whisker type galena detector can be seen. This was not in regular use, however, having been replaced by an Audiotron vacuum diode, which has been mounted on the face of the upper chassis. This diode tube had to be heated over a stove burner periodically to restore its vacuum. To the extreme left is the power panel for the transmitter. To each side of the receiver are variable capacitors, added by the operators to make the receiver more sensitive. Receiving earphones can be seen on the desk top to the front of the picture, and the transmitting key is just out of the picture to the right. On the wall to the rear is a message clipboard."

Artist's conception. Information adhered to the back of the print: "S.G. Wilder, barkentine of 604 tons and 625 M lumber capacity, was built at Port Blakely in 1889 [Lloyd's Register gives 1887 as the date built] by Hall Bros. for A.H. Paul, San Francisco, for the Island sugar trade. In 1893 she made the trip from San Francisco to Honolulu in 9 days, 14 hours. In 1910 she was bought by the Matson Line and sold out of the Hawaii trade, to the Alaska Salmon Co. In 1918 she was bought by G.W. McNear, San Francisco, for $75,000, and was resold 15 months later to Whitney-Bodden, Mobile, for $25,000. In February, 1922, she was picked up off the coast of Florida by the steamship Hawkeye State, abandoned and waterlogged, and towed to Baltimore. In October, 1924, her crew were rescued by a lightship, when she was again abandoned waterlogged, this time bound from Jacksonville to Guantanamo. Again she was towed in, and converted to a barge at Wilmington, N.C. She foundered on July 3, 1933, in tow off Fenwick I., Virginia, with the loss of three of her five crew."

"TACOMA DAILY TRIBUNE, TACOMA, WASH.
STEAMER MONTARA IS AN OLD TIMER
In the words of Captain Riley of the steamship MONTARA, this vessel is not a beautiful ship, but more of a historical 'warrior.' The MONTARA is now engaged in the freight business between California ports and Tacoma, but was originally constructed to carry cotton between New York and Galveston. Some of this history was recalled yesterday by Pilot Harry Marsden of the Pacific Coast Steamship Company and Captain Riley.
In the cotton trade the MONTARA did not prove much of a success and was brought to the Pacific coast and put in the coffee trade between San Francisco and South America. Then she came to the Northern trade as a coal carrier. In these days she was known as the WILLAMETTE.
On her outward passage from Tacoma one night, many years ago, she rammed the passenger steamer PREMIER off Bush Point with the result that 13 people lost their lives. Both vessels were beached and it took nearly all the tugs on the Sound to pull the WILLAMETTE away from the other vessel. In the litigation that followed the PREMIER was taken to British Columbia and is not the CHARMER. She has never been on the American side since the accident.
Several years later the WILLIAMETTE was wrecked just out from Comox, but was raised by the Morans and her name changed to MONTARA. Then she gained renown with Captain Riley by being captured by the Japanese while running the blockade. Her owners purchased her back again at auction and Riley brought her back to the coast.
'She is not a handsome brute -- this old warrior of mine,' Captain Riley states. 'She is not fast but a fine sea boat. In fact, I wouldn't be afraid to go to hades in her.'"

Registered May 8, 1918 at San Francisco she was the first wooden cargo vessel to be completed and delivered to the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation. Ten months after her keel was laid at Kruse & Banks shipyard at North Bend, Oregon (on Coos Bay). The hull, launched December 15, 1917, was towed to San Francisco where the engines were installed." Additional information included inside the large print enclosure: "Laid down in 1918 by McEachern Ship Company of Astoria as AROTURUS for the U.S. Shipping Board (Hough Type wooden cargo vessel), work on her was suspended after launching in May 1919. Completed at Portland in April 1920 as a specialized lumber carrier for the Brooks Scanlon Corp. of Florida. She had a peculiar short rig in order to fit inside a covered dock at Eastport, Florida where she loaded lumber by electric dock cranes. In Cuba she discharged and loaded sugar with her own gear. In 1923 BROOKS was in service on west coast having been chartered by McCormick Steamship Co. In 1924 renamed DAVID C. MEYER when bought by Wiggins Meyer S.S. Co. of Portland. She operated chiefly between Columbia River ports, San Pedro and San Diego until March 8, 1926 when she hit a rock and stranded off Point Fermin. Though towed into San Pedro she was beyond repair and broken up later that year." Gift - Louis Hough.
