View apparently taken because of the snow on the mountains. In the middle background is the McNear warehouse. The shack in the right foreground is Jack Murray's. Copies of 2 clippings on the back of the large print. One reads: "The late Hiram Hopkins rightfully considered the above picture one of the most remarkable old-time local photographs in existence. It was taken, perhaps because of snow on Sonoma Mountains, from the alley off the downtown end of Western Avenue and shows the famous McNear Warehouse before Golden Eagle built on the site. Objects piled on the opposite river bank are bricks or basalt blocks, not potatoes as one account recorded. Mr. Hopkins said the tank was used to fill a water wagon for street sprinkling. He thought the two-story building to the left of the warehouse belonged to Camm & Hedges but this may be doubtful - the C&H lumber concern started in 1884 and the photo has a feeling of being older.
