Advisory to Richard Nixon 1958-1985

Scope and Contents

This series consists of documents created and accumulated by Martin Anderson as a result of working as an advisor on Richard Nixon's 1968 presidential campaign, presidential transition, and administration. He was Director of Policy Research in the presidential campaign, and a major participant in the presidential transition; during the administration, he was Special Assistant to the President (1969-1970), Special Consultant to the President for Systems Analysis (1970-1971), and advisor to Vice President Spiro Agnew.
Documents span the years 1958 to 1985, with the bulk created between 1967 and 1971, when Anderson was actively advising Nixon. Forms of material present in the series include internal correspondence (e.g., notes taken at meetings, telephone messages, memorandums, and telex transcripts), documents with Richard Nixon's markings (e.g., printed matter with underlining, checkmarks, and stars), Anderson's notes, speech drafts, statement drafts, briefing books, reports, directories and membership lists, campaign schedules, to-do lists, press clippings and other printed matter, fact sheets, external correspondence, press releases, interview transcripts, political ephemera (e.g., pamphlets, flyers, etc.), and fund raising figures.
The documents cover dozens of issues, including agriculture, the All-Volunteer Armed Forces (a.k.a., AVAF), computer technology and telecommunications, education, John Birch Society, Model Cities program, natural resources, steel and textile imports, supersonic transport, the cities and urban affairs, tobacco, welfare, and wilderness. Topics well documented in this series include the All-Volunteer Armed Force (AVAF) and welfare.
Major correspondents include other members of the White House executive office, campaign staffers, senators, members of academia, members of the press, members of the private sector, and lobbyists, including Richard V. Allen, Annelise Anderson, Alicia Boyd, Pat Buchanan, Arthur Burns (Martin Anderson's supervisor), Dwight Chapin (a.k.a., "DC"), Murray Chotiner, Ken Cole, Tom Cole, John Ehrlichman, Lawrence Fertig, Alan Greenspan, Bob Haldeman, Ed Harper, James Keogh, Robert P. Mayo, Daniel P. Moynihan, Edward Nixon, Bill Timmons, Anne Volz, Agnes Waldron, and Don Webster.
Of note, the series includes original annotations handwritten by Richard Nixon. It also includes a signed letter to Anderson from Nixon crediting him with ending the draft on 27 January 1973; the only available copy of a handwritten document by Nixon outlining the plan to end the Vietnam War; documents and research pertaining to the end of the draft (along with Walter Oi and Milton Friedman, Anderson is credited with helping to end military conscription in the United States); and first editions, draft copies and background research for "Nixon on the Issues," a limited edition publication that was distributed mainly to the press.

Nixon Mixed Year Files 1960-1981

Scope and Contents

Files in this series span more than one period of Martin Anderson's employment with Richard Nixon, as documents from the various periods are intermingled within the files. The bulk of the documents in this series pertain to the campaign and transition. The files appear to have been assembled haphazardly, perhaps demonstrating the heightened level activity of the transition period.
Documents span the years 1960 to 1981, and include internal correspondence (e.g., notes taken at meetings, telephone messages, memoranda), Martin Anderson's notes, reports, speech drafts, statement drafts, to-do lists, press clippings and other printed matter, and external correspondence.
Major correspondents include members of the White House executive office, members of academia, political strategists, and members of the private sector, including Pat Buchanan, Arthur Burns, Murray Chotiner, Milton Friedman, Alan Greenspan, and John Sears. Much of the internal correspondence pertains to the Administration period and Anderson's work with welfare reform. External correspondence includes congratulatory letters and telegrams, thank you letters, invitations to social engagements, requests for employment in the administration (including resumes), and Christmas cards.
Of note, the series includes the following items of interest: notes from Alan Greenspan to Richard Nixon, and memorandums from Martin Anderson to Alan Greenspan regarding Nixon's campaign opponents.

Advisory to Ronald Reagan 1943-2010

Scope and Contents

This series consists of documents created and accumulated by Martin Anderson as a result of working as an advisor on Ronald Reagan's 1976 and 1980 presidential campaigns, presidential transition, and administration. He was a senior policy advisor on both presidential campaigns, a major participant in the presidential transition, and, during the administration, he was Assistant to the President for Policy Development (1981 to 1982). He was also a member of Reagan's Legislative Strategy Group, Budget Working Group, Presidential Task Force on Regulatory Relief, Economic Forecasting Group, and President's Economic Policy Advisory Board. He drafted Ronald Reagan's first policy memorandums on economics, energy, and defense.
Documents span the years 1943 to 2010, with the bulk created between 1975 and 1984, when Anderson was actively advising Reagan. Forms of material present in the series include briefing papers, policy memorandums, polls, correspondence (both internal and external), staff directories, manuals, printed matter (press clippings, etc.), Anderson's notes, official statements of Ronald Reagan, policy issue statements (draft and final), speech transcripts (draft and final), press releases, schedules and itineraries, and staff directories and other membership lists. Internal correspondence includes messages to and from other campaign and White House staff, often regarding scheduling and media appointments; circulated printed matter, sometimes with comments; policy research, consisting of printed matter and notes; correspondence to and from Hoover Institution staff; handwritten schedules; to-do lists; letters to Ronald Reagan; notes taken during meetings with Ronald Reagan that quote Reagan; and missed call slips, usually from his assistant, Barbara Honegger. External correspondents include people wishing to work for Reagan, including work samples, resumes, and letters of recommendation.
The series includes hundreds of correspondents, including Ronald Reagan, Alan Greenspan, Arthur Burns, Ed Meese III, Jack Kemp, Milton Friedman, Orrin Hatch, Peter D. Hannaford, Richard B. Wirthlin, Richard V. Allen, and William Casey.
Of note, the series includes the following items of interest: a draft of "A Vision for America," Reagan's pre-presidential speech, typed with President Reagan's handwritten edits and annotations, and given on election-eve, November 3, 1980; multiple Ronald Reagan speeches and speech cards, including a hand-annotated speech accepting the Republican Party's nomination for president; Ronald Reagan's party platform background material and correspondence; Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars") materials and correspondence; documents pertaining to Nuclear Arms Control relating to Russia and the end of the Cold War, culminating in the fall of the Berlin Wall and the demise of the Soviet Union; rare, internal correspondence (a.k.a. interactive writing) from the presidential campaigns and transition; notes on morning policy meetings with Edwin Meese III; and timetables and schedules.
See the "Writings -- Published -- Revolution" series for more documents created and accumulated as a result of Martin Anderson's employment with Ronald Reagan.
