Correspondence (circa 1930-circa 1980)

Scope and Content

The series includes a mix of notes, letters, telegrams, invitations to events, birthday cards, holiday cards, and well-wishes, sent both to and by the Durantes, and incorporates both correspondence with colleagues, friends and acquaintances, as well as from fans. The majority of the items are holiday cards and birthday cards. Many of the birthday cards are from fans and were sent in response to a 1976 National Enquirer appeal to send birthday wishes to cheer up the then-ailing Durante. Among the correspondents represented are Desi Arnaz, Fred Astaire, Pearl Bailey, Milton Berle, Ernest Borgnine, Mel Brooks, Jimmy Carter, Joan Crawford, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Ted Kennedy, Liberace, Robert Mitchum, Martha Raye, Frank Sinatra, Adlai Stevenson, and many others. Where possible, correspondence was arranged alphabetically by sender's last name. Also included are messages of condolence sent to the Durante family following Durante's death. There is no specific arrangement to the series.
