Radio Projects 1933-1951 1934-1948

Scope and Content

The series consists of script material for a number of radio projects in which Durante was involved. The series is arranged into the following subseries: Guest Appearances, Armed Forces Radio, The Chase and Sanborn Hour, The Triumphant Hour, and Philanthropic and Charity Appearances. The bulk of the series represents Durante's guest appearance on radio programs including The Alan Young Show , The Bob Hope Show, The Danny Kaye Show, The Eddie Cantor Show, The Elgin Show, The Frank Sinatra Show, The Fred Allen Show, The Kate Smith Show, Kraft Music Hall, The Louella Parsons Show, The Old Gold Hour, Philco Radio Time, The Orson Welles Show, the Rudy Vallee Show, and others. Also included are scripts that document Durante's tenure as guest host of the Chase and Sanborn Hour (also known as the Eddie Cantor Show). Scripts from Armed Forces Radio comprise programs such as Command Performance, G.I. Journal, Mail Call, and the New Year's Salute to Armed Forces. Also among the scripts is material that represents Durante's appearances on fundraising broadcasts for organizations including the March of Dimes, the American Cancer Society, and New York Catholic Charities. Notably missing from the series is script material related to Durante's work as host of the Camel Comedy Caravan in 1943-1944, the 1945-1948 Rexall-sponsored Jimmy Durante Show, and the 1948-1949 Camel-sponsored Jimmy Durante Show. The files in each subseries are arranged alphabetically by show or file title.

Scope and Contents note

Audio recordings are restricted and require advance notice for access. Includes transcription discs, commercially released 78 rpm and 45 rpm records, and reel-to-reel tapes. The bulk of the transcription discs represent television and radio broadcasts of The Jimmy Durante Show . Also represented are Durante-hosted programs such as All Star Revue, Colgate Comedy Hour, The Jimmy Durante Show with Alan Young, and The Jimmy Durante Show with Don Ameche; and Durantes guest appearances on programs including the Bob Hope Buick Show, the Rudy Vallee Fleischmann Hour, Kraft Music Hall with Al Jolson, Texaco Star Theatre, and Philco Radio Time with Bing Crosby. The series also comprises multiple copies of Durantes commercially released recordings, including 45 rpm recordings of songs such as "A-razz-a-ma-tazz," The Pussy Cat Song, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Im the Guy Who Found the Lost Chord, Chidibee-Ch-Ch, and others. The majority of reel-to-reel tapes document Durantes appearances on the Lennon Sisters Hour A small amount of tapes include Durante guest appearances on programs such as The Andy Williams Show, Hollywood Palace, The Mike Douglas Show, The Sonny and Cher Show, the 1970 and 1971 Emmy Awards. Other projects in which Durante may or may not have been involved include recordings annotated with Hubert Humphrey or HHH on the boxes. There are a small number of commercially released 78 rpm discs of songs by other popular recording artists. Records are housed in their original LP albums. Many of these albums have titles and lists of contents indicated on the front or inside cover, however, most of the actual contents of the albums do not reflect these annotations. There is no specific arrangement to the series.
