The "Staff" folder shows Kempthorne interacting with National Park Service staff members, primarily from SFMNHP.

File Unit 041.  Grace Quan (built 2003; junk), 2003-2012

Scope and Content Note

Consists of photographs of GRACE QUAN under construction at China Camp State Park in 2003; her launch at China Camp State Park on October 28, 2003; sail sewing; her shakedown cruise launch from Hyde Street Pier on August 4, 2004; and under sail. Includes SFMNHP staff members John Muir and Bill Doll along with volunteers Todd Bloch and others. The "Grace Quan_MAKE magazine.11_14_2006" folder contains images apparently for an issue of MAKE magazine.

File Unit 043.  Haslett Warehouse, 2002-2006

Scope and Content Note

Consists of photographs of the Haslett Warehouse. Includes photographs of the construction during the building's conversion to the Argonaut Hotel and the Park's Visitor Center; video footage of the building consumed by fire in March 2002 (Note: copyright for this footage was not transferred to the Park); photographs of the fire damage; and photographs of the building after reconstruction was completed, 2003-2006.

Scope and Content Note

Consists of photographs and videos of HERCULES.

Subfolders are as follows:

  • "Boiler markings_09" contains detail photographs of markings on the HERCULES boiler on April 15, 2009.
  • "Herc 09 Dry Dock Folder" contains photographs of HERCULES in drydock September-October 2009, with several shots showing marine growth on the hull.
  • "HERC. exhibit 2007_2008" contains digitized images used in and photographs of "The Labors of Hercules" exhibit in the Visitors Center, 2007-2008, about the history and restoration of the vessel.
  • "Hercules 100th Anniv" contains photographs from the Tugboat Festival at Hyde Street Pier to mark the 100th anniversary of HERCULES on September 22, 2007. Ranger Chris Edwards, Park Historian Stephen Canright, Tom MacFadyen, and Harold Sommer speak at a podium.
  • "Hercules pre-drydock Oct. 2012" contains detail photographs of HERCULES at Hyde Street Pier on October 25, 2011.
  • "Herc mpg" and "Hercules Video" contain versions of a video showing HERCULES steaming from Sausalito to Hyde Street Pier, December 1-2, 1995. Shows the boiler being fired, close-ups of machinery moving, and Harold Sommer in the wheelhouse. Filmed by Richard Everett with Post Production by John Cavala.
  • The files not sorted into folders show HERCULES docked at Hyde Street Pier, the engine room, wheelhouse, galley, crew's quarters, and volunteers on board.
Note that there are also photographs of volunteer Ed Neubauer installing new tubes in the donkey engine in September 2011 (See also Series 4.1, File Unit 27, for additional photos). They were likely placed in the HERCULES folder in error.

Consists of photographs documenting the condition of John Bertonccini's "Biography of a deep water man" manuscript in the library's collection; images of pages from Louis Weule's personal journal (SAFR 13569, HDC 1); photographs of album pages containing photographs of sailing vessels associated with Lester Stone and Stone Boat Yard (Note: The album was loaned for copying. The copy negatives are located in SAFR 19781, P01-023); photographs of ERICA T launching in 2001; and photographs of HDD staff members Erica Toland, Ed LeBlanc, Sara Diamond, Lisbit Bailey, and Stephanie Hamashin.

File Unit 046.  Hyde Street Pier and Aquatic Park beach visitors, 1999-2013

Scope and Content Note

Consists primarily of photographs of Park visitors (tourists and school groups) on Hyde Street Pier, aboard vessels, and at Aquatic Park beach. Some photographs show SFMNHP staff members interacting with visitors. The Park's vessels are often in view (C.A. THAYER, BALCLUTHA, EPPLETON HALL, EUREKA, and HERCULES). Also includes two subfolders of photographs of 2nd grade students touring the pier and C.A. THAYER on April 9, 2008, led by staff member Elizabeth Evans as well as photographs of sea stars and other marine life growing on the Hyde Street Pier pilings in 2005 and 2010.

File Unit 048.  Interpretation Division activities, 2000-2012

Scope and Content Note

Consists of photographs and video footage of Interpretation Division activities in the Park. Includes photographs of staff members and volunteers interacting with visitors (tourists and school groups) on Hyde Street Pier and aboard BALCLUTHA. There are photographs of capstan turning demonstrations and aloft demonstrations. The video footage consists of tours led by Carol Kiser of BALCLUTHA in 2004 and of the Lewis Ark in 2011; tours by Chris Edwards of BALCLUTHA in 2004 and of the HERCULES steam engine in 2004; and an aloft demonstration aboard BALCLUTHA in 2013 led by Chris Edwards (with Mark Neuweld and JR Earnest assisting) during a Park staff meeting. The File Unit also includes a folder of illustrations used in the Junior Ranger activity books.

Consists of images to be used as signs to illustrate various aspects of the Park to visitors. Includes a photograph of the Maritime Museum Building with the caption "Maritime Museum"; a photograph of ranger Peter Kasin with a group of school children aboard BALCLUTHA with the caption "Interpretation"; a photograph of children at Aquatic Park beach with the caption "Aquatic Park"; an aerial view of Hyde Street Pier with the caption "Historic Vessels"; an illustration of Union Iron Works with the caption "Museum Collections"; a photograph of living history members reenacting a suffragette march with the caption "VIP-Volunteers in the Parks"; and a photograph of an event in the Maritime Research Center reading room with the caption "Friends of the San Francisco Maritime Museum Library." Some of the signs were hung in the desk area of the Interpretation Division's administrative assistant. They were also used on posters at open house events (See Series 4.1, File Unit 068).

File Unit 053.  Maritime Research Center reading room, events and collections, 2004-2011

Scope and Content Note

Consists of photographs of researchers in the reading room of the Maritime Research Center (including two men examining the OLYMPIA plans), library stacks, and library staff work spaces. Also contains photographs of a Friends of the San Francisco Maritime Museum Library gala event in the reading room on October 19, 2007. Two subfolders contain historic images from the Park's photograph collections of BALCLUTHA and World War II related images from an unidentified source digitized for former Park librarian David Hull. The File Unit also includes photographs of the oldest library book in the Park's collection (Lazari Bayfii annotations in l. II.) and a copy of Wrinkles in Practical Navigation by S.T.S. Lecky.

File Unit 056.  Maritime History Training and C.A. Thayer (built 1895; schooner, 3m) restoration progress, 2011

Scope and Content Note

Consists of video footage of the Maritime History Training for SFMNHP staff, Park partners, and volunteers, March-April 2011. See Series 3, File Unit 25, for the original videocassettes. Includes footage of Day 1 of the training on March 15, 2011, with Superintendent Craig Kenkel, Robbyn Jackson, and Stephen Canright discussing the history of the Park as well as maritime history and culture. The participants tour the Maritime Museum Building (Ted Miles presents). Footage of day 2 of the training on March 22, 2011, includes a brief discussion of two Park partners: the Friends of the San Francisco Maritime Museum Library and the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association. Participants are given a tour of the library and Historic Documents Departments by Ted Miles, Lisbit Bailey, Sara Diamond, and Palma You. Judy Hitzeman gives participants a tour of the objects storage area. Gina Bardi provides an overview of the library's online catalog. On the third date (not stated) Mark Neuweld and Chris Edwards discuss the Park's interpretation program while aboard EUREKA.
The folder also contains video clips from September 2011 of Phil Erwin in the hold of C.A. THAYER and Jeff Morris at the aft house of C.A. THAYER discussing the vessel's current restoration progress and what work is yet to be done.
The folder located on Drive 2 also included video footage of an introduction by Steve Haller, historian at Golden Gate National Recreation Area, to a lecture about shipwrecks.

File Unit 063.  Maritime Museum Building, 1999-2014

Scope and Content Note

Consists of photographs of the Maritime Museum Building interior and exterior. Includes photographs of before and after restoration work. Restoration projects included basement repairs and bleachers demolition/reconstruction in 2008-2010; Hilaire Hiler lobby mural documentation in 2006 and restoration in 2008; elevator construction in 2007; and Sargent Johnson slate wall tile cleaning in 2002. Also includes photographs of artifacts on display in the building.
The "Colorwheel" folder contains photographs of paintings and a print of color studies by artist Hilaire Hiler and Charles Nunemaker that were originally on the wall of the Prismatarium room in the Maritime Museum Building. Inlcudes "Pigment Primaries" (SAFR 20994), "Solar Spectrum" (SAFR 20993), "Psychological Primaries" (SAFR 18280), "Cross Section of Color Solid" (SAFR 15080), and "Dr. Ostwald's Color Solid" (SAFR 15079) as well as a photograph of a print containing both a "Pigment Primaries" wheel and "Hiler Psychological Color Chart" (SAFR 20992).
