Statecraft Television Series and Book Project File 1987-1990 1989-1990

Scope and Contents

Contains materials created in the development of a television series, produced by MacNeil Lehrer Productions (MLP), exploring diplomacy and statecraft. With Jim Lehrer joining Shultz as host and narrator, the twelve part series was intended to be accompanied by a twelve-chapter book of essays, and a memoir that would provide Shultz's insights into examples from his own experiences in the Nixon and Reagan administrations.
The television series material contains correspondence, agreements, project outlines and plans, notes, announcements, trancripts, taping schedules, promo reel, videotape, and budget, expenses, and fundraising materials. Also included are Charles Hill's notes and planning materials.
The statecraft and memoir book project materials contain correspondence, particularly with agents and publishers, negotiations, contracts, outlines, and synopses. Also included are drafts of the essays to complement the Statecraft TV series episodes, many of them in Charles Hill's handwriting, and versions of Shultz's memoir outline, variously titled, A New Beginning, and The Global Frontier: My Life in the State Department.
