Series 1:
Search and Destroy and Early Punk Materials
1970-1997
Biography/History
Search and Destroy was a punk zine published between 1977 and 1979 in San Francisco, where it was initiated by editor V. Vale during his time
working as a mail clerk at City Lights bookstore. A large group of correspondents, contributors, and staff from all over the
United States and Europe worked (often pseudonymously) to run, publish, distribute, and create content for the zine, which
aimed to document the burgeoning punk movement. Although local Bay Area bands and venues were featured prominently, content
included interviews with bands and artists such as the Ramones, Devo, Talking Heads, and Joe Strummer, articles on punk music
and politics, international directories of bands and magazines, and street reports on events everywhere from Seattle to London.
The publication also showcased striking graphics and photography, much of which was original work supplied by photographers
Ruby Ray, Kamera Zie, Bruce Conner, and Richard Peterson.
Scope and Content
Series 1 contains materials related to the production and publication of
Search and Destroy and two related projects, the unpublished
Search and Destroy: Photographs and
Search and Destroy: The Complete Reprint. In addition to original issues of
Search and Destroy, the layouts, collages, administrative records, and proofs included here help to illustrate physical production and distribution
of the zine, while the drafts of articles and interviews, photographs, notes, research and correspondence offer insight into
the creative process, as well as previously unpublished material. Finally, this series also contains a large collection of
punk related flyers, posters, periodicals and zines that extends beyond the specific scope and span of the zine itself.

Subseries 1.4: Research and Content
1971-1981
Scope and Content
This subseries contains the notes, articles, photographs, research files, and other materials that constituted the collaborative
labor and intellectual content of
Search and Destroy. Notable zine content includes handwritten and annotated interviews with Bay Area and Southern California punk bands such
as The Nuns, the Screamers, The Avengers, and X, as well as artists such as Steve Jones, Devo, The Clash, and The Ramones.
The majority of the material is found in the Subject Files, which cover certain staff and regular contributors such as Nico
Ordway, Caffeine Jean, Ruby Ray, and Kamera Zie, in addition to numerous other bands, artists, publications and venues relevant
to the punk rock scene. While some files contain interviews, collected articles, photographs and 7 inch records, many contain
only a few clippings. As with the interviews, Bay Area and Southern California bands and venues received a more complete treatment,
as did artists and individuals such as Iggy Pop and Sid Vicious. The notes cover a wide range of topics, from brainstorming
on the fundamental principles and aesthetics of
Search and Destroy to lists of potential contributors.
Organization and Arrangement
This subseries is arranged alphabetically. In keeping with the original order of the materials, original content such as articles
and interviews can be found in three places: arranged alphabetically under Articles and Interviews; within the associated
Subject File; or within Contributor and Staff Correspondence in Subseries 1.6: Correspondence.

Subseries 1.5: Early Punk Materials
1970-1981
Scope and Content
While still relevant to the production of
Search and Destroy, this subseries contains material that extends beyond the scope and span of the magazine itself. Dating to the late 1970s
and early 1980s, this collection of ephemera, periodicals, and zines provides insight into the punk rock scene from both a
local and a global perspective. Ephemera includes press kits and releases, record catalogs, and a large collection of flyers
and posters that feature Bay Area and Los Angeles venues, in particular Mabuhay Gardens, and advertise for bands and local
events such as Rock Against Racism and Benefit for the Coal Miner’s Strike. The periodicals cover both politics and music
and range from clippings to complete issues of newspapers and magazines, including publications such as
Class Struggle,
Worker’s Vanguard, and several years’ worth of
Sounds,
NME, and
Melody Maker. Finally, the collection offers a unique and sizable selection of zines from all over the United States and the world, and
includes numerous issues from influential publications such as
Damage,
Flipside,
NoMag,
Punk,

Subseries 1.6: Correspondence
1971-1981
Scope and Content
This series contains all correspondence that did not deal directly with the administration of
Search and Destroy or its consequent projects, including fan-mail, inquiries from aspiring zine makers, criticism, and mail orders from individuals.
The correspondence offers a wide variety of personal communications from around the world. Because
Search and Destroy solicited reports on local punk rock scenes for its recurring “Street Report” segment, correspondents often included descriptions
of their local scene, even with the most routine requests. Also notable are the exchanges between contributors and staff,
which contain original photos, notes, and drafts of articles and interviews.

Series 2: Original RE/Search Titles
1980-1995
Biography/History
RE/Search Publications was established in 1981 by Andrea Juno and V. Vale, former editor of
Search and Destroy. Although they also published works such as Brion Gysin’s
Here to Go, J.G. Ballard’s
Atrocity Exhibition, and Octave Mirbeau’s
Torture Garden, RE/Search Publications is primarily known for its original works, which were largely interview based and centered on topics
relating to alternative lifestyles and subcultures. Among these original works were titles such as the
Industrial Culture Handbook,
Pranks,
Incredibly Strange Films,
Modern Primitives, and
Angry Women. In 1995 the partnership between Juno and Vale came to an acrimonious end, at which time Juno departed to found Juno Books
in New York while Vale remained in San Francisco, publishing under the name V/Search Publications with his new partner Marion
Wallace.
Scope and Content
Series 2 contains material related to the titles produced by partners Andrea Juno and V. Vale under the name RE/Search Publications
during the years 1981 to 1995. The amount and type of material found in this collection varies considerably for each title,
but the available material provides insight into editorial processes, research and interview preparation, distribution of
labor, and the impact of technological change on a small publisher. Material includes correspondence, original layouts, photographs,
interview tapes and transcripts in various stages of editing, proofs and collected research. Collection contains no copy of
RE/Search #1, no material related to RE/Search #2 and RE/Search #3, and limited material related to RE/Search #4/5 and RE/Search
#6/7. Also included are correspondence and interview transcripts for the title
Angry Women in Rock, which was produced and published by Andrea Juno shortly after the dissolution of their partnership.
Organization and Arrangement
This series is arranged chronologically, by title. Subseries are arranged alphabetically.

Series 3: Original V/Search Titles
1996-2014
Biography/History
Although the character of the work changed under the oversight of Vale, Wallace, and east coast collaborator Chris Trela,
V/Search Publications adopted the same approach and aesthetic as RE/Search Publications, eventually re-appropriating the name
RE/Search in 1997. Original works produced after 1995 include
Zines,
Swing, and
Modern Pagans, while other publishing projects include Daniel Mannix’s
Memoirs of a Sword Swallower and Alex Zhavoronkov’s
Dating AI.
Scope and Content
This series contains materials related to titles produced by V. Vale and Marion Wallace after the departure of Andrea Juno,
from 1995-2013. Although Vale continued to affiliate himself with RE/Search Publications after the dissolution of the partnership,
both reprints and new titles were published under V/Search Publications from 1995-1997, at which time the name RE/Search Publications
was fully re-appropriated. Material includes correspondence, original layouts, photographs, interview tapes and transcripts
in various stages of editing, proofs and collected research. Also contains material related to three unrealized projects involving
photographer Sue Brisk, artist Robert Delford Brown, and individuals associated with steampunk subculture.

Scope and Content

Subseries 5.1: Submissions and Proposals
1980-2010
Scope and Content
This subseries contains submissions and proposals sent to RE/Search, in the form of typescripts, book proposals, sample chapters,
outlines, writing samples, poetry, artwork, photographs, illustrations, drawings, music, and invitations to collaborate on
literary or publishing projects. Materials span the years 1980-2010. This subseries is rich in its variety of content, since
RE/Search had become known for publishing on the fringe and explicit topics, and hence attracted submissions not suited for
conventional publishing houses. Although the vast majority of the submissions were not accepted by RE/Search for publication,
some went on to be published elsewhere. Of note are submissions of poetry by G. Sutton Breiding, the typescript of
Unfictions by Jason Price Everett, the typescript
Addict with photography by Chris Keeley, the typescript of a dissertation by theatre/performance artist and writer Julie Wilson
(now Wilson-Bokowiec) on Hermann Nitsch and Genesis P-Orridge, a typescript by Jaz Coleman (Killing Joke), prose and poetry
submissions by Marty Wilson-Piper (The Church), a book proposal by Veronica Vera, the typescript of
Whore Carnival by Shannon Bell, and a number of other proposals and typescripts relating to pornography, sex workers, and erotica. A number
of submissions and proposals were sent from other countries to RE/Search.

and proposals arranged chronologically by date.

Subseries 8.1: Subject Files
1960s-1990s
Scope and Content
This subseries contains the subject files once housed in Vale’s filing cabinets regarding a variety of topics such as art,
film, and opera, usually in the form of magazines, clippings, pamphlets, cassettes, or flyers. There is also a significant
amount of content for certain more esoteric topics like the parody religion Church of the Subgenius founded by J. R. “Rob”
Dobbs, the First National Church of the Exquisite Panic founded by Robert Delford Brown, and the musical/visual art project
Autopsia. Of particular interest might be the files regarding underground industrial bands such as Einstürzende Neubauten,
Monte Cazazza, and S.P.K., as well as the feminist punk movement RiotGrrrl. Notable correspondence includes that regarding
Vale’s purchase of the painting “Pogo the Clown” by serial killer John Wayne Gacy while the latter was in prison and with
alternative culture photographer Charles Gatewood.
Organization and Arrangement
Maintained original order of the materials, which were sorted in alphabetical order by subject headings.
