Joseph Williams was born near Richmond, Virginia on May 15, 1769. He married Mary Evans, who was born January 27, 1775, and
raised seven sons. The family lived in Broadtop, Pennsylvania until 1814, when they moved to Mansfield, Ohio, where Joseph
owned land and was in the banking business. He and three of his sons moved to Batesville, Arkansas in 1839, where he died
in February 1840. Descendents of Joseph Williams emigrated to California in 1853.
