Contains 15 letters by Allison Wheeler and 5 letters by Alfred Wheeler, from San Francisco, Calif., back east to New York, many to their sister Caroline Garner Chapman. The letters concern Allison's travel to Calif. by ship, life in Calif. including Alfred's ranch, money, politics, and family matters. Also includes a couple of letters from Caroline Garner Chapman's children to their mother on a visit west to Calif. in 1877.

Alfred Wheeler, a native of New York, came to San Francisco, Calif. around 1849. He was a member of the first Calif. State Legislature, a U.S. attorney and author of "Land titles in San Francisco" (1852). Allison Wheeler, Alfred's brother, arrived in San Francisco in 1855.
