Note:

William Colbert was born December 29, 1827 near Saint Paris, Ohio. In the late 1840s he traveled back and forth between Ohio and Indiana, settling in the latter for varying periods of time. In 1852 he traveled overland by wagon to California, worked the gold mines, and in 1854 sailed from San Francisco on the "Yankee Blade" with $2000 worth of gold. Less than twenty four hours later the steamer went aground on Point Arguello. The crews manning the boats charged exorbitant rates to row the passengers to safety. Most, including Colbert, lost all the money they had. He found himself back in San Francisco and returned to gold mining, In 1856 he once again sailed from San Francisco, arrived in New York with no mishap, and spent the rest of his life in Wabash, Indiana. Colbert died in 1900.
