Note:
W.F. Witherell was born in New York in 1841. He attended West Point and was a cadet there when Abraham Lincoln was shot. Presumably,
his title of Colonel was honorary, as he quickly became involved in various enterprises, as a businessman and entrepreneur,
including mining ventures in Arizona, California, and Colorado. He carried on an extensive correspondence regarding the acquiring
and selling of mining property, including assays of ore, and investigating the potential value of various mines and mining
claims. He also acted as a middle man between owners of mines and potential investors.
Witherell.
