Note:

William C. Mathes was born in Hale Center, Texas on December 17, 1899. He received a B.M.A. from the University of Texas in 1921, and an LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1924. Mathes was in private practice in Los Angeles until 1945, when he was nominated by President Harry S. Truman to the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. Mathes served as chief judge from 1964 to 1965, assumed senior status on June 9, 1965, and remained in that capacity until his death on July 24, 1967.
