Title:

Theatrical personalities: primarily Julia Marlowe and E.H. Sothern

Creator/Contributor:

Genthe, Arnold, 1869-1942

Creator/Contributor:

Notman Photo Co. (Boston, Mass.)

Abstract:

Collection comprises chiefly studio portraits of actors Julia Marlowe and her husband E.H. Sothern. The majority are by Arnold Genthe, in his earlier pictorialist style. Some of the Genthe prints are signed with "S.F." following his name, and others "N.Y.", indicating they were printed both before and after his 1911 move from San Francisco to New York. Collection contains Julia Marlowe portraits or unidentified portraits thought to be Marlowe (PIC folders 1-31, AX folders 1-21, 56-57); portraits of Marlowe and Sothern (PIC folder 32, AX folders 22-23); E.H. Sothern or unidentified portraits thought to be he (PIC folders 34-54, AX folders 24-32); David Warfield (PIC folder 55, AX folders 32-33); copy prints of Irma LaPierre (PIC folder 59); Mary Daly (PIC folder 60); Ruby Norton (AX folder 34); three stage scenes (some as late as the 1940s); several unidentified actors and actresses of the early 20th century; and one 19th century cabinet card portrait of a man copied from an early photograph of circa 1850, perhaps a family member of Sothern or Marlowe (PIC folder 63).
