Abstract:

Contains the letters of Tom Wells to a young lady from his town, M.J. Harrington, alternately addressed as "Maggie" and "Josie". Wells describes his work in a photo gallery in San Francisco, and his observances of life in San Francisco including a fire, an accident, an attempted theft, the beach and a beached whale, going to church, festivals and parades, a Chinese wash house and an anti-Chinese riot.
