Abstract:

Ella Kelly's teaching notebook consists of 107 pages of notes organized under the following topics: Mental Philosophy; Work of Teacher; Definition of Education; Studies for Training; Reading; Spelling; Language; Grammar; Arithmetic. Pages 110 through 116 include the Constitution of the Alumni Association of Marysville High School; a copy of a letter of concern written to the Marysville Board of Education by the Alumni Association in 1907 and a partial list of founding members of the Alumni Association. The fly-leaf is signed "Ella Kelly, January 25, 1883, S.N.S., San Jose".
The notebook is accompanied by a program for the tenth commencement of Marysville High School on June 24, 1887 and an announcement of a reception for the high school class of 1909 sent by the Alumni Association with Miss Ella L. Kelly, corresponding secretary, designated to receive replies.

Note:

Ella Louise Kelly was born on Oct. 22, 1859 in the mining town of Sears in Sierra County to James and Mary Kelly. She attended Marysville High School where she graduated in the class of 1878. She then attended and graduated from the San Jose State Teachers' College, returning to Marysville where she spent many years teaching in public schools there. In 1922, she moved to Palo Alto where she was active in the Women's Club of Palo Alto and the Women's Christian Temperance Union. She died on March 12, 1944 at the age of 84 years.
