Note:
Samuel A. Shumway was born August 18, 1831 in Massachusetts, son of Alpheus Shumway and Phila Marsh. He sailed to California
from New York aboard the Prometheus on December 5, 1852 and must have traveled via the Isthmus if Panama, since he arrived
in San Francisco on January 7, 1853. Shumway subsequently engaged in mining in the Coloma and Georgetown areas. He returned
to Massachusetts at an unknown date, married Lucinda Jeanette Stoddard, and served in the 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery
Regiment during the Civil War. Shumway married his second wife, Anna Congdon Holmes, on August 16, 1870, and died in Massachusetts
in 1913.
