Note:
Edwin Bryant Crocker was born on April 26, 1818 in Jamesville, New York. After earning a degree in engineering and another
in law, Crocker and his second wife Margaret came to Sacramento in 1852. There he practiced law, and in 1854 became local
chair of the Republican Party. In 1863 Governor Leland Stanford appointed him Justice of the California Supreme Court. The
following year Crocker became legal counsel for the Central Pacific Railroad. In 1869, he suffered a stroke and retired to
pursue art collecting. His home and art collection became the nucleus of what is now the Crocker Art Gallery. E. B. Crocker
died on June 24, 1875.
John H. McKune was born in Sullivan County, New York on March 23, 1819. After practicing law In Pennsylvania he came to California
in 1849 and lived the rest iof his life in Sacramento, with the exception of two years in San Francisco. He held the positions
of San Francisco County Attorney and agent for the United States Land Commission, was elected to the State Legislature in
1856 on the Democratic ticket, and was elected to the Sixth Judicial District first as a Democrat and later as a Republican.
McKune worked as a code commissioner compiling state statutes, and also complied ordinances for the City of Sacramento. He
died on March 23, 1905.
