Abstract:
Contains research files, upublished typescripts, correspondence, and photocopies mostly concerning the writings of I.N. Choynski,
a prominent San Francisco Jewish journalist. Includes Robert L. Singerman's unpublished typescript of selected excerpts from
I.N. Choynski's columns, writing under the pen name of "Maftir," titled "The San Francisco journalism of I.N. Choynski", edited
by Singerman and assisted by Elinor Grumet, handwritten topical index cards to Choynski's columns and other related materials.
Also includes a photcopy of an unpublished manuscript on I.N. Choynski by Rudolf Glanz titled, "Social reporter at the Golden
Gate: the inimitable Maftir" and a photocopy typescript of the same manuscript.

I.N. (Isadore Nathan) Choynski, writing under the pseudonym "Maftir", was the San Francisco correspondent for the "American
Israelite", Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise's national Jewish newspaper. Among Choynski's other ventures, he owned and ran several
newspapers and a saloon, tried his hand at gold mining, sold stock in mines (unsuccessfully), and hawked newspapers on the
street. For many years he owned an antiquarian bookstore where the intellectual elite of the San Francisco would gather, including
Mark Twain, Bret Harte, and Robert Ingersoll.
