Russell Lee De Valois was born in Ames, Iowa on December 15, 1926 He received an A.B. degree from Oberlin College in 1947,
and a Ph.D. in physiological psychology from the University of Michigan in 1952. After teaching at Indiana University he joined
the University of California, Berkeley Faculty in 1968. He was widely honored for his work in psychophysics and physiology
of vision, with special expertise in the areas of color and spatial vision. De Valois died on September 20, 2003.
