Abstract:
Records of Kenny's lifelong participation in the National Lawyers Guild including correspondence and case work during two
terms as president, from 1940-1948, and his term as Attorney General of California from 1942-1948. Case documents include
transcripts, briefs, correspondence and clippings from the trials of Julius & Ethel Rosenberg, the Hollywood Ten and other
HUAC contempt cases, and the case against Communist Party of America leader, William Z. Foster. Legislation files contain
correspondence and printed materials concerning loyalty oath bills, California State Propositions 5 and 6, Communist Control
Act of 1954, and the Mundt-Nixon Bill of 1948. Minutes, reports, publications and correspondence from the Progressive Citizens
of America Party document Kenny's campaign support of Henry Wallace during his 1948 U.S. presidential bid. Kenny's personal
papers include correspondence from his wife, Sara, and two close friends, Aubrey Finn and author Duncan Aikman.

Robert W. Kenny (August 21, 1901 - July 20, 1976), 21st Attorney General of California (1943-1947) who, in 1946, ran unsuccessfully
against Earl Warren for state governor. In 1937 he was a founding member of the National Lawyers Guild and served as the California
state representative. In 1947, he led the defense of the Hollywood Ten.
