The letters, written to his wife in Detroit, Michigan, describe his voyage from New York to California via Panama, with a
stop in Los Angeles, and his stay in San Francisco to test a magnetic device for separating gold from the sand at Gold Bluff
(Feb.-Sept. 1852). The diary records his return voyage via Nicaragua, with description of stop at Acapulco (Oct. 15-Nov. 8,
1852). Photograph of Brown included also.
