Note:

Peter J. Brown and John N. Ryerson left Peterson, N.J. in March, 1850 for California. Voyaged by ship to the Isthmus where the two went overland to Panama. Arrived in Sacramento in July, 1850, did some mining around Coloma, then set up as merchants in Sacramento under the name P.J. Brown. In March, 1851, sold business and returned home.
