Note:

Anton Roman was born in Bavaria in about 1828. He immigrated to the United States, and in 1849 went overland to California. After several years in mining Roman opened the Shasta Book Store in Shasta City, California in 1853. Two years later he added a picture gallery to the business and in 1857 moved it to San Francisco at 417 and 419 Montgomery Street. By the mid-1860s Roman was one of the foremost publishers on the West Coast. In 1868 he founded the Overland Monthly with Bret Harte as editor, but sold it a year later due to health reasons. In 1871 A. Roman and Company moved into the prestigious Lick House at 11 Montgomery. The firm went bankrupt in 1879 but quickly recovered. He attempted magazine publication again 1880 with The Californian: A Western Monthly Magazine, but sold it after six months. Roman published his final book in 1886 and retired from the book business two years later. From then until his death in 1903 he worked as a real estate agent and loan broker.
