The Posey Tube (also known as the George A. Posey Tube) is an underwater tunnel located between the cities of Oakland and Alameda, California. The tunnel was formally named and dedicated as the George A. Posey Tube on October 27, 1928 by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors in honor of the tube's chief engineer, County Surveyor George A. Posey. The Posey tube replaced a swing bridge that interfered with maritime traffic. The ventilation buildings that house the exhaust and fresh air fans are built in an art deco style. The ventilation of toxic vehicular exhaust fume design was modeled on that of the Holland Tunnel (New York) ventilation system, and Ole Singstad, who had designed the pioneering ventilation system of the Holland Tunnel, consulted on the project.
George Addison Posey (September 28, 1883-August 3, 1932) was an engineer who designed a number of notable structures around Oakland, California including the Leimert Bridge to Oakmore Highlands and the George A. Posey Tube between Oakland and Alameda. He was also Alameda County Surveyor.
