Neeli Cherkovski was born Nelson Cherry in Santa Monica in 1945, to father Sam Cherry (who became an established photographer
in San Francisco in the 1950s) and mother Clare Cherry; worked as a political consultant in the 1970s in Riverside; in 1975
moved to San Francisco to work for then-California Senator George Moscone; produced the first San Francisco Poetry Festival;
friend and biographer of Charles Bukowski, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Bob Kaufman; taught literature and philosophy at New
College of California until the school closed in 2008.
