The Portuguse Protective and Benevolent Association (referred to as the "Portuguese Protective and Benevolent Society" by
some sources) was founded in San Francisco in 1868 and eventually became the present Luso-American Life Insurance Society.
This organization, while it sponsored a few annual balls, was apparently never involved in promoting a local Holy Ghost Festa
of the type that remain prevalent throughout California.
