Note:
George Huntington Peck Sr. (1819-1903) was the son of John Peck and Almira Keyes of Vermont. He followed a sailing career
up until 1841, when he became a lawyer, but he returned to the sea, after finding legal practice not to his liking. In 1849,
he sailed for San Francisco on the Oregon, arriving in December. In the 1850's he followed several careers, farmer, miner,
lawyer, and school teacher. He married Sarah Fenton around 1852 and had two sons by her, George H. Peck Jr. (1856-1940) and
John H. F. (Fenton) Peck (1853-1919). In the 1860's, he was a school principal in San Francisco. In 1864, he married Mary
Chater. They had two daughters, Katherine (Kitty) and Mary Chater Peck Jardine (1867-1951). In 1869, following business losses,
George Peck Sr. moved to El Monte, California where he bought a 500 acre ranch, the beginning of a career in real estate and
banking. He also served for a time as Superintendent of Public Schools in Los Angeles. The Peck family remained on the ranch
until around 1900, when they moved to Los Angeles. In the meantime, George H. Peck Jr. moved to San Pedro in 1886, age 30.
He began buying, selling, and developing real estate there and in Manhattan Beach. He later became very wealthy thanks to
sales like the 1913 sale of 104 acres for Fort MacArthur in San Pedro and the sale of land in 1911 to Standard Oil for the
Chevron Refinery in El Segundo. George Peck Jr. married Olive Mitchell Peck (1852-1914). They had four children, William,
Rina, Alma, and Leland.
John Jardine was a New York architect born in Scotland. He designed many buildings along the East Coast and invested in Florida
citrus production. John Earle Jardine Sr., his son, was born in 1869 in New York, but moved to California where he invested
in Pasadena real estate, becoming President of the William Staats Real Estate Brokerage. He was active in southern California
citrus production and invested in citrus farmland. In 1895, Jardine Sr. married Mary (Chater) Peck, daughter of George H.
Peck Sr. They had four children, John Earle Jr., born in 1899, and Vincent, Douglas, and Catherine. It appears that John Jardine
and John Earle Jardine ultimately controlled much of the southern California citrus market.
