Note:
Peter F. McDermott (1862-1927) was an Irish immigrant who became a Socialist and labor organizer. He began as a railroad telegraph
operator in Xenia, IL and eventually became an agent for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Alviso, CA. He was also connected
to the Socialist weekly Appeal to Reason, and to the Socialist-owned Girard Manufacturing Company.
The Girard Manufacturing Company of Girard, KS was founded by Eli N. Richardson with stock held entirely by American Socialists.
Its product line included Eureka Renovator cleaning detergents and soap, Nutreto cereal food drink, Nutol vegetable shortening,
Handy-Holdfast clothespins, Appeal to Reason cigars, and Girard Stoves. The company's stock sales and profits were devoted
to promoting Socialist and labor causes in America.
Appeal to Reason was a Socialist weekly published in Kansas from 1895 to 1922, originally by Julius Augustus Wayland.
