ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives is the world's largest research library and archive devoted to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) concerns. ONE began in 1942, when writer and activist, Jim Kepner (d. November 15, 1997 at the age of about 74), began a private collection of gay-related materials while he was living in New York City. After moving to Los Angeles, California, Kepner attended his first meeting of the Mattachine Society, an early gay rights organization, in 1952. Later that year, several members of the Mattachine Society, including educator and activist, Dorr Legg (1904-1994), met to discuss creating a gay magazine. On November 29, 1952, they formed ONE Inc. and published the first issue of ONE magazine in January 1953. In 1956, Kepner, Legg, and Merritt M. Thompson (1884-1970) founded the ONE Institute, the educational arm of ONE Inc. that conducted seminars and published a journal that ceased publication in 1967. In 1971, Kepner named his collection, The Western Gay Archives, and opened it to researchers. He filed for non-profit status in 1979 and moved his renamed collection, The Gay Archives: The Natalie Barney/Edward Carpenter Library, into a more accommodating building in Hollywood, California. In 1988, the Archives' name was changed to the International Gay and Lesbian Archives (IGLA) to reflect the growing scope of the collection. IGLA and the ONE Institute merged in 1994 to become what is today the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives.
