Hoffman arrived in San Francisco on May 16, 1850 and opened a law office; in March of 1851 he was appointed United States District Judge for the Northern District of California by President Millard Fillmore. Many of his decisions in this capacity involved settlement of land titles relating to conflicts between the Federal government and claimants of Mexican land grants.
