Abstract:

Snapshot photographs documenting pageants, drag performances, parades and other events of San Francisco's gay community between the early 1970s and the mid-1980s. Identified events include the Great Tricycle Race, the 1974 Gay Freedom Day Parade, Madness 71 revue, and Mr. Gay San Francisco. Many events are unidentified. Murdach is likely depicted in drag in some images. A few images depict Bob Cramer, founder of the Cable Car Awards, and at least one depicts pioneering drag performer and gay rights advocate José Julio Sarria. Identified locations include The Mint, The Gaslight and Club Rendezvous. Also includes a few groups of photographs taken in Mexico City, New Orleans, and Portland, Oregon.
