Abstract:
Contains earthquake materials including letters from Nellie May Brown to her mother, Estella L. Brown, detailing her anxiety
about being in the Bay Area; her concern for her brother, Ralph Brown; and her experiences as a nurse in the Relief Corps.
Also included are pictures of San Francisco after the earthquake and fire, and an article about the efforts of the Los Angeles
Examiner Relief Corps. Nellie May also collected 18 photographs, possibly taken by Los Angeles Examiner photographer Arthur
Holliday, of the Relief Corps nurses, the refugees' attempts to leave San Francisco, the damage caused by the earthquake and
fire, and the Hearst tent cities in Oakland; copy prints of these remain in the collection. Finally, there are two postcards
to Estella from Ralph, who worked for the San Francisco Bulletin, written in the week following the earthquake.
The family material consists of five portraits of Estella, William, Ralph, and Nellie May taken in Toronto, Canada; Nellie
May's nursing memorabilia and secondary school diploma; a letter from her father, William Penn Brown, to Estella; and personal
ephemera of William and Estella from their life together in Kincardine, Canada. Their personal ephemera includes prayer cards;
Estella's 1920 obituary; and documents detailing William's public life in Canada. Finally, there is an outline of instruction
for U.S. citizenship classes in Los Angeles, Calif.
