Michael Pachovas was born on June 17, 1948. He grew up in Crown Point, Indiana, He attended Indiana University from 1966-1968
before joining the Peace Corps. Soom after arriving in Ethiopia in 1969 he broke his neck and became a paraplegic. In 1971
he moved to Berkeley, where he became a leader in the Physically Disabled Students Program and the Disabled Students Union
at the University of California,. Berkeley. He received a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1976. Pachovas was a director
at the Center for Independent Living, as well as a couselor and later the executive director of the California Disabled Prisoners'
Program, 1975-1983. Among his many community activities Pachovos was a member of the City of Berkeley Commission on Disability,
and the AC Transit Advisory Board. He was an integral participant in the campaign to pass Berkeley Measure E, a special tax
to fund emergency services for the disabled. He participated in the Disabled American Freedom Ride from San Francisco to
Washington, D.C. in 1981. Pachovas died in Berkeley on July 5, 2016.
