Abstract:

Newspaper clippings which Rabbi Fried gathered relating to a variety of his concerns as well as some"letters to the editor" that he wrote, materials relating to his rabbinate, including a few handwritten sermons and a photocopy of a scrapbook from his time when he was the rabbi at Congregation Ohabai Shalome. This scrapbook also contains information about activities of Fried's wife, Adele, and those of their son, I. Adriel, who was heavily involved in Aleph Zadik Aleph. The collection also contains a small number of copies of Fried's writings that were published in the Emanu-El, the Jewish newspaper of San Francisco. Michael Fried was born around 1887 in Hungary. He served as the rabbi at Sacramento's Congregation B'nai Israel, from 1908 to 1924. After he left that congregation, he served as the rabbi for San Francisco's Congregation Ohabai Shalome until his death in 1940.
