He has held leadership positions in the California Coastal Commission (1972-1985), the Sierra Club (1987-1993), the California Coastal Conservancy (1994-1997), and the William and Flora Hewlitt Foundation (1997-2003). He is currently an environmental consultant based in Marin County, California.
