Note:

Obed Macy was born to a prominent Nantucket family in Guilford, North Carolina, on December 14, 1801. He graduated as a Doctor of Medicine from the State Medical College of North Carolina, and moved to Indiana. There he met Lucinda Polk, whom he married on October 17, 1824. On March 1, 1850, Macy, his wife, his children, and his sister's family left in a wagon train for California, and ultimately traveled through Salt Lake City and the southern route. The party reached the San Bernardino Valley in December. In 1852 the Macy family moved to Los Angeles, where Obed operated the Bella Union Hotel and in 1856 opened Los Angeles' first public bathhouse. Obed Macy died in that city on July 9, 1857. The Macy family remained in California-100 years later its descendants lived both in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas.
