Abstract:

Discusses his childhood and education in China, his university and related education in the United States and Europe, his research in China, involvement with the Chung-kuo kʻo hsüeh yüan (Academia Sinica), and teaching assignments in the United States. It also includes his recollections of many linguists in China and the West, and a discussion of guiding principles and methodology for historical comparative linguistics. Also included are two essays by Prof. Li's daughter, Lindy Li Mark, concerning her parents' trips to China in 1978 and 1983.
