Lila Morris O'Neale graduated from Stanford University (A.B. 1910) and Columbia University (B.S. 1916). She taught for a number of years in California, Wisconsin and Oregon before coming to U.C. Berkeley to study textile design and technology and anthropology (Ph.D. 1930). After a Guggenheim Fellowship in Peru (1931-1932 she taught in and chaired the Department of Household (later Decorative) Art and served as a curator in the Anthropology Museum until her death. Her publications include studies of contemporary Mayan textiles in Guatemala, historic textiles in Peru and Yurok and Karuk basket makers in Northern California.
