Note:

Luther Burbank was born March 7, 1849 in Lancaster, Massachusetts. Receiving only an elementary school education, he took an early interest in botany, and using his inheritance bought a plot of land and developed the Burbank Potato. He subsequently sold his rights and used the money to move to Santa Rosa, California. Before his death on April 11, 1926 Burbank utilized crossbreeding and hybridization techniques, and developed many new strains and varieties of plants, fruits, and vegetables.
Edward Wickson (1848-1923) was a renowned naturalist and plant breeder who became a professor at the University of California and editor of "Pacific Rural Press." He was asked by Burbank's publishers in 1910 to work on the 12-volume "Methods and Discoveries." Wickson wrote a large percentage of the early drafts, but was replaced as editor in 1913 after finding it difficult getting Burbank to focus on the project, and was out of the picture completely by 1914 (giving way to six other writers). Wickson's concept of "Methods and Discoveries" differed greatly from what was finally issued.
