Title:
Legal documents relating to the transfer of title of real property of two houses in Mexico City: Mexico City, Mexico, 1631-1911
Abstract:
Titles of property and notarial deeds regarding the ownership of two small lots in Mexico City, 1631-1911. Some documents
describe the succession of ownership for a house located in the barrio of Santa Cruz Coautzingo (later called Nuestra Senora
de la Soledad), 1759-1911; others comprise the records of a lot adjacent to the convent of San Jeronimo in Mexico City, 1631-1911.
Together, the documents illustrate the urban growth of the capital, the changes in its neighborhoods, and the evolution of
the names of streets, squares and neighborhoods. Also, they show the vicissitudes related to the enforcement of the Leyes
de Reforma affecting ecclesiastic property in 19th-century Mexico. In addition, they provide insight into the methods of describing,
transferring, taxing, and obtaining title to land in New Spain. The owners of these houses include men and women, and a British
subject in the 1850s.
