The Commercial Pacific Cable Company was formed in 1901 with the goal of laying the first telegraph cable across the Pacific Ocean from America to the Philippines, China and Japan. The first section was laid in 1902 from San Francisco to Honolulu. The San Francisco landing occurred near the foot of Fulton Street, at the edge of Golden Gate Park, just south of the Cliff House.
