Kenneth Zwerin, born in San Francisco, was both a rabbi and an attorney. In the early 1930s, he served congregations in Menlo
Park and San Francisco, and he referred to himself as a "freelance community rabbi" and often gave sermons in English for
reform-minded youth. In 1934-1935, he was the rabbi for a small Jewish community in Hawaii that was composed mainly of Jews
serving in the U.S. military; those from Harbin, Manchuria; and those individuals who were from the mainland but happened
to be doing business in the islands. He returned to San Francisco, in 1935, to take over his father's law practice. During
World War II, he served briefly as a rabbi at a military camp in San Luis Obispo, California. He also wrote articles on Jewish
ethics, local rabbis, and reform Judaism.
