The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal organization established to promote friendship, charity, and benevolence. J.H. Rathbone
founded it initially in 1864 to heal hatred caused by the Civil War. It was later incorporated by the U.S. Congress (Aug.
5, 1870). Many of the members were Jewish. Lodge #139 was founded in 1886 in Hills Ferry, California and moved three miles
away in 1889 to the newly-built town of Newman. By 1910, Lodge #139 had approximately 80 members.
