Abstract:
Snapshots and studio portraits chiefly depicting Kanae Nagasawa, his associates and his Sonoma County estate (Royal Oak?)
at Fountain Grove. Photograph album (shelved in ALB) contains snapshots of Nagasawa's home at Fountain Grove; Kanae Nagasawa
and various associates, including Thomas Lake Harris and his wife Jane Lee Waring, and a group of Japanese tourists; and various
points of interest photographed during a cross-country train trip, including George Washington's house and tomb at Mount Vernon,
the Bronx Park Conservatory, Los Angeles hotels, Southern California landscapes, a Pasadena ostrich farm, and train stations
in El Paso and other southwestern locales. Folders (PIC) contain many studio and snapshot portraits, including Nagasawa, Margaret
Ware, T.F. Bacon, Samuel Swan M.D., Mrs. Jerrit Smith, Mrs. Luther Killarsk (?), J.D. Buck, Baby John, E.W. Berridge M.D.,
Miss Ida Browning, E.M Whitlock (?), Miss Roberts and I. Stewart Smith and his wife, in addition to many unidentified persons;
photographs of Nagasawa's estate (referred to as Royal Oak in descriptive annotations) at Fountain Grove; snapshots of unidentified
locations; and miscellaneous papers, including a birthday card and an invitation, both addressed to Nagasawa. Oversize folder
(AX) includes a view of Cypress Point, Monterey, by Tomikawa; and a group portrait including Nagasawa, perhaps taken at Fountain
Grove. Ambrotype (CASE) depicts an unidentified young girl with a basket of flowers.

Kanae Nagasawa (sometimes spelled Kanaye Nagasawa; original name: Isonaga Hikonosuke), b. Kagoshima (Satsuma) Prefecture,
Japan 1852, d. Santa Rosa, Calif. 1934; member of the secret 1865 Japanese Satsuma student mission to Great Britain; became
closely associated with Thomas Lake Harris and his Brotherhood of the New Life communities in Amenia and Brocton, N.Y. and
at Fountain Grove in Santa Rosa, Calif., of which he would eventually become the owner; the first Japanese national to reside
permanently in the United States; credited as the first Japanese winemaker in United States and the first to introduce California
wines to Japan.
